Liuzhou Travel Guide
Liuzhou (Chinese: 柳州; pinyin: Liǔzhōu) is in north-central Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, in southern China, located on the banks of Liujiang River, about 179 km from Yangshuo County, 157km from Guilin City. With a history of more than 2,100 years, it became known as Longcheng (Dragon City) in 742 A.D., it’s changed into Liuzhou in 1736, but today, people still love to call this city as Dragon City.
Liuzhou has a mix of rolling karst scenery, ideal for exploring the minority villages in the area.
East Gate Tower
East Gate Tower, also called East Tower, constructed in Ming Dynasty, located by the Liujiang River in Liuzhou City, with a history of more than 600 years. It is the best preserved ancient gate in Liuzhou.
Dalongtan Park
Dalongtan Park (dà lóng tán gōng yuán 大龙潭公园), located in the southern Liuzhou City, Covering an area of about 544 hectares, the park is a unit of the natural karst scenery, the culture of minority and the tropical sight together. Surrounded by many nice mountains and waters, Dalongtan Park has Wohu Mountain ,Beauty Peak, Mirror Lake, Dragon Pool & Thunder Pool etc. This park also has many vegetations and wildlife, you can see many interesting plants and birds when walking in it.There was one famous litterateur in Tang dynasty, Liu Zongyuan (liǔ zōng yuán 柳宗元), who wrote an artical Pray for Rain in Thunder Pool. In order to commemorate him, people constructed a pavillion housing the tablet, carved the essay written by Liu Zongyuan and sacrificial altar and Leitang Temple.There is on Wind and Rain Bridge (fēng yǔ qiáo 风雨桥) on the Mirror Lake, Same name of the one in Sanjiang. With the roof and flying eaves on the bridge, Wind and Rain Bridge looks unique.In Dalongtan Park, you can enjoy the beautiful natural scenery as well as appreciate the art of civilian architecture and know more about the customs and traditional culture of the ethnic groups.
Minorities in Liuzhou
Liuzhou city consists of six counties and four districts, covering an area of 18,600 square km2. 3,625 million people of 48 ethnics live there, including Han, Zhuang, Miao, Yao, Dong and etc. Here is also the grand place where folk songs are extremely popular. Liuzhou has unique and special folk features and traditions, Zhang people’s song, Yao People’s dance, Miao people’s festivals and Dong people’s house are well-known as the Top 4 uniqueness. The Chengyang Rain & Wind Bridge and the Drum-town house in Sanjiang county are well known too.
